Personal Project

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #7 -

Well I had my Gallery showing! It went great and was an amazing experience. It was March 19th from 5-7pm and I was required to be there to show off my art. I had a lot of people take my business cards and asked me about my work. It was a lot of fun to start with an idea and see it come to life. Because of this experience I know it will help my in future gallery showings.

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #6 -

For this next update, I wanted to convey that even with this photography project (non film), I still had to do a pre-production for it. I started with my idea first (the script), I knew I wanted to do the "Take Another Look". I then had to go deeper with my idea, come up with a title for the series, and write down just my ideas and thoughts for it. My next selection would be locations. I knew I wanted to show my art in a Gallery, I wanted to put my work into an independent Gallery somewhere downtown, but with time restraints I was offered the NPLAZA building on campus. It wouldn't have been my first choose, but it worked for what I needed. Next was equipment and crew. I figured out I was just going to need one person to help me. With my equipment I was going to be up close to all of my subjects, so I would need a couple lens with an option of using my lens extenders. I also would need to use a reflector, but no strobe or continuous light. I decided I was going to use natural lighting to light my subjects. With the idea I had I felt that natural lighting would best convey to look I was going for. Lastly would be my budget. I had to get stickies to hand my title cards, artist statement and business cards. I also needed 5 frames, sizes would need to be 21x25 each and pictures 16x20. I also needed to print out each picture, so that had to be put into the budget too. Lucky I already had the equipment I needed, so none of that I had to budget for. One item that I didn't remember to budget for was business cards. Even though this was not a film, I still had to go through the same steps in pre-production planning.

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #5 -

Here are some of my images I am deciding to display. I can only pick 5 of them, so it will be difficult to choose. With my idea "Take Another Look", I didn't have anything specific in mind. I just went out with my camera and would take pictures of whatever caught my eye. I would look at my subject and decided what on it I wanted to bring attention too.

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #4 -

With my next update I had to figure out where I was going to hang my artwork. I was the one to create the layout and email it out to my group, so I was able to get the space I wanted. Doesn't hurt to be proactive! I need a total of a 16 foot space. My first option was a 12 foot space, but after choosing my frame and picture size I realized I need more space between each picture. I then had to upgrade my space needed, to 16 feet. After getting the right spacing my next thing to do would be to draw the layout of how it would hang in the gallery, with the exact spacing of everything. Meaning everything had to be 58 inches on center, the exact size of my title cards for each piece and business cards/holder, they way they would be hung, etc. That way when I went to go hang my art, I already knew what to do and where to put everything. Below is a picture of both processes I did.

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #3 -

Okay!! So what I have been working on next for my personal project is my Digital Portfolio. I am working on getting my website up and running, showing what I can do. I will officially have 2 websites, both will be connected. One will show more of my still life photography, studio work, and more of my abstract pieces. The other will be portraits, engagements and weddings. Once those are up and running I will be posting the URL link onto this page, so keep a look out.

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #2 -

For the next part of my assignment I needed to create an artist statement, giving a little history about me and what my art pieces will be about. Below is what I came up with! This will go next to my group of photographs and to give the viewers information of what my art pieces are meant to show.

Artist Statement:
I have always loved the arts and when I came to college I was originally a painting and drawing major. Drawing was something that came naturally to me. I would sit in front on my canvas and see exactly what I wanted to create. My attention though was quickly taken away from what I though I wanted to major in, to Photography. Once I decided to pursue this, I have never regretted my decision. Photography became another way for me to express myself and help me look at things differently. With the help of my drawing background, I looked at subjects with another artistic eye. When I looked through my camera, just like the canvas, I knew what I wanted to capture. I have always taken "pictures" but never knew how to correctly take them. Each one of my class has pushed me in different directions and has given me the experiences I needed to become the photographer I am today.

The idea I had for my Senior Show “Take Another Look” shows more of my passion and something I enjoy photographing. With this specific idea it gives me a variety of subjects to choose from. With this freedom to shoot whatever I want, I can also control to light my subjects in different ways. I decided to use both the studio as well as natural light to emphasis what I want someone to focus on. The reason behind this idea is to help others look at things differently. Many people look at objects as one big subject and miss the beauty of just one part of it. With these photos, I wanted to show that one part that others might miss. It might remind people to slow down and really look at something or someone just a little closer or longer.

PERSONAL PROJECT UPDATE #1 -

This is the first update for my personal project. I decided I needed to pick two mentors that could help me with my process. Alex and Lynn are professors that I have had before and both bring different aspects I need to have for this project to succeed. Lynn works more in the studio and knows how to light subjects perfectly and can help me with that process. Alex can help me with natural lighting and he helped nail down my idea. Below is a list I made and the Idea I ended up going with.

Two Mentors:
            -Lynn Chamberlain
            -Alex Chamberlain

Ideas:
            *Engagements/Bridals/Wedding Day: (Business Side)
                        - Get hired & see through the entire job
                        - Take Engagements/Edits
                        - Take Bridals/Edits
                        - Meet w/ clients to select photos
                        - Wedding day photos/Edits
                        - Give final projects on CD to Client

            *Self Portraits: (Personal Side)
                        - Show different sides of me in an artistic way
                        - Do studio shots also

            *Take Another Look: (Passion Side)
                        - Take photos of people, things etc. up close
                        - Idea behind it is you take your subject and only take a
picture of a small part of it.
                        - Take pictures of something that someone might miss the
details and bring focus to that.
                        - Film or Digital?
                        - 5 photos
                        - Black & White or Color?
                        - Old/Rustic/Antique

Summary of Meetings with Mentors:
The meetings with my mentors went really well. We went over each Idea I had and narrowed down to the one that would work the best for me. Alex explained it really well, that with Engagements and Bridals are a good business part of photography, I would have a hard time making it unique to me. The idea I had, “Take Another Look”, would be more of my passion and something I would enjoy doing.  With this specific idea it would give me a variety of subjects to choose from. I can also chose to light these subjects in different ways using the studio as well as natural light. My mentors also said, with the idea I chose it could turn out to be a very nice senior project.  I’m very excited to get started now that I picked my idea to do!

PERSONAL PROJECT -

I finally decided on a Personal Project for this class, Yay! I am a photography major and will be graduating this semester. I will be doing my project on an Art Gallery showing that I will prepare from start to finish. I will need to come up with my idea, what my pieces are about, how many will be in the show, titles of each piece, etc. There is going to be a lot to it and will officially be my first Gallery Show. Thinking about it makes me excited and nervous at the same time. Showing your work, no matter what it is, puts you in a vulnerable state. You're putting a part of you out there for people to critique and look at.

No matter what happens, I know this will be a good experience. I will need to do this in the future and this will give me the practice I need. As I complete different parts of this project I will post what I have done on here, showing the updates, my thoughts, and progress throughout this process. I hope this will turn out the way I want, but will enjoy the journey of it as it goes along!
